Diary, 1861 May 15-1870 Apr.; (bulk, 1861 May 15 - 1865 Feb. 18.)

Transcribed copy of diary, 15 May 1861 - 1 June 1862 and 25 Dec. 1864 - 18 Feb. 1865, consisting of entries describing her life on the home front and daily activities at her home in Feasterville, S.C. Topics discussed include domestic chores; visits to neighboring families; sadness over her brother's departure for war; teaching at Feasterville Academy; sighting of "the Great Comet of 1861" during the night of July 2nd; movement of local Confederate regiments; reading Charlotte Bronte's novel, Shirley; and noting newspaper accounts of Civil War battles. Other events include a trip to Columbia, S.C., during Aug. 1861 to see a dress parade and company review; having teeth extracted; using palmetto fronds to weave miniature palmettos and straw hats; the death of her sister Sallie; meetings of the Soldiers' Relief Association; sewing various articles of clothing for soldiers; and days of fasting. Diary also contains a list of children enrolled in her Florida school during March and April 1870.
